Permanent Lights in the Kootenays: How to Compare Prairie, Gemstone and 48V Systems

If you have started shopping for permanent lights in the Kootenays, you have probably noticed something confusing. Every company says their lights are the best, every brochure promises "16 million colours," and the spec sheets read like a circuit board manual. So how do you actually compare them?
We install permanent lighting across Castlegar, Nelson, Trail and the surrounding areas, and we get this question at almost every estimate. Here is the plain-English version of what matters, what does not, and how the three main types of systems you will see around here stack up.
The Three Kinds of Permanent Lights You Will Run Into
Most systems being sold in the West Kootenays right now fall into one of three camps:
- Prairie Lighting, a Canadian company based in Calgary. This is what we install. It runs on a 24V Pro Series system with 30mm pixels.
- Gemstone Lights, a well-known national brand, also out of Calgary, sold through a large dealer network. Their published guide lists a 12V system.
- 48V import pixels, factory-made lights that get rebranded under many different names. You will usually spot them by a square module with six small diodes on it.
All three are "permanent lights." All three mount in a track under your eaves and run from a phone app. The differences show up in the details that you live with for the next fifteen years.
1. The White Light Is What You Will See Most
Here is something most people do not think about until after their install: you will run your lights in plain white far more than in any holiday colour. Most of our customers leave them on warm white for the other 300-plus nights of the year.
That makes the white diode the single most important spec on the sheet. Prairie pixels use a dedicated true 2700K warm white diode, the same soft glow as a classic porch bulb. Gemstone's guide lists a 2800K warm white. Many import systems mix their white from red, green and blue, or use a separate white chip with no published colour temperature, and the result can look bluish or slightly green next to your home's other lighting.

2. Voltage: Mostly the Installer's Concern
You will hear a lot about voltage. Higher-voltage systems like 48V can run longer lines between power supplies, which saves the installer time on very long rooflines. Lower-voltage systems need power added a little sooner.
For a typical Kootenay home, you will not see the difference from the street. All three are low-voltage systems, so "safe low voltage" is not a reason to pick one over another. What matters more is how the system is installed, sealed and backed.
3. Who Stands Behind It When Something Goes Wrong
This is the question we would ask first. A pixel on your roof will see hundreds of freeze-thaw cycles, wet snow, and summer heat. Something will eventually need attention, so you want to know who picks up the phone.
- Prairie (installed by Grit & Grind): lifetime warranty, and our crew comes back to fix it. No 1-800 number.
- Gemstone: strong product warranty, serviced through the nearest authorized dealer.
- 48V imports: the warranty is whatever the reseller offers, and service depends on whether that reseller is still around in year five.
4. Price: Same Class of Light, Different Price Tag
Prairie and Gemstone are in the same class of light: three-diode pixels with a dedicated warm white, built for Canadian winters. The difference is mostly what you pay for the brand. Import systems usually look cheapest up front, but long-term cost depends entirely on how long they last and who replaces them.
If you already have a quote from another company, bring it to your estimate. We are happy to put ours next to it, line by line.
Do Not Forget the Windows
One tip from the field: permanent lights look their best on a clean house. Glowing rooflines over streaky, dusty windows is a strange combination, especially once your interior lights are on at night. A lot of our customers book a professional window cleaning in the same visit so the whole home shines for the holidays. Most Nelson homes are as low as $299, and the protective coat is free.
Get a Side-by-Side for Your Home
The easiest way to compare is in person. At your free 20-minute estimate, we bring live pixels you can control from the app and track samples to match your fascia colour. You will see the warm white for yourself before you decide anything.
