True 2700K Warm White: Why the White in Your Permanent Lights Matters

When people picture permanent lights, they picture Christmas. Red and green chases, Halloween orange, maybe team colours on game night. Those are fun. But after installing permanent lighting on homes across Castlegar, Nelson and Trail, we have noticed something: most customers run their lights in warm white almost every night of the year.
That makes the white light the most important thing to get right, and it is the thing most people never ask about.
What "2700K" Actually Means
Light colour is measured in Kelvin (K). Lower numbers are warmer and more golden. Higher numbers are cooler and bluer.
- 2700K: the soft, warm glow of a classic incandescent porch bulb.
- 3000K to 3500K: a bit crisper and whiter.
- 5000K and up: daylight white, closer to a parking lot or office.
On a home at night, 2700K is the colour that reads as cozy and high-end. It matches most exterior fixtures and the light coming from inside your windows, so the whole house looks like one design instead of a patchwork.
Why "Mixed" White Looks Off
Some permanent lighting systems do not have a true warm white at all. They make "white" by turning on the red, green and blue diodes together. That can work in a pinch, but it often looks slightly blue, slightly green, or uneven from one light to the next. Next to a warm porch light, the difference is obvious.
The Prairie Lighting pixels we install have a dedicated true 2700K warm white diode alongside the colour diodes. You get every colour you want for the holidays, plus a real warm white for the other 300 nights.
How to Check a System Before You Buy
- Ask for the Kelvin number of the white. If nobody can tell you, that is a sign.
- Look at the pixel itself. A dedicated warm white diode usually has a yellow-tinted chip you can see.
- See it in person, at night if you can. At our free estimate, we bring live pixels so you can switch between colours and warm white yourself.

Warm Light Through Clean Windows
Here is a detail that makes a bigger difference than you would expect: the glow from your roofline reflects in your windows. Streaky or dusty glass catches that light and makes it look hazy. Clean glass keeps it crisp. That is why so many customers book a professional window cleaning before their lights go up. Most Nelson homes are as low as $299, with the protective coat free.
